Each official has specific zones of responsibility and works together as a team to ensure every play is properly covered. The key to success is maintaining proper spacing, angles, and following the prescribed keys for each type of play.
Follows the ball from behind, keys on the lead blocker or ball carrier. Works toward the LOS on every play. Observes the action around the ball carrier, especially during tackles and piles.
Faces the LOS, keys on the first down lineman. Observes the line of scrimmage for holding, illegal blocks, and false starts. Monitors the QB on play action.
Faces the LOS, keys on the widest receiver. Watches for motion, illegal formation, and pass interference. Counts players, observes the sideline for out-of-bounds plays.
After the kick: R observes try/fG, U watches for roughing, L monitors sideline. All move to goal line for long kicks.
Referee signals for time-out. Linesman assists with keeping players in bounds. Umpire ensures players are properly equipped. All officials communicate remaining time-outs to Referee.
Referee stops clock. Umpire protects injured player. Linesman controls sidelines. Officials must know the 3-consecutive-injury-timeout rule. If blood present, player must leave for at least one play.
Referee supervises intermission. Linesman ensures teams change sides. Umpire monitors player equipment. All officials verify score before leaving field. End of game: Referee confirms with coach, ensures proper handshake.
